No, of course, that's NOT how it happened! "Hi-Ati, or the creation of digits" is a story I wrote based on Kipling's "Just So Stories"... but without his talent!
Published in 1980 by Luc Thanassecos for "l'Impensé Radical,"it's just a story, but it has long served as a way for me to introduce numerals.

And don't be angry:
for the record, a mathematician who was walking past the window of "l'Impensé radical" stopped dead in his tracks in front of what was at the time a poster... then he stormed into the bookstore, took poor Luc to task, and shouting that it was unacceptable to treat such a serious subject so lightly!
